Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park

Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park

Things to do - general

Amboseli National Park

In comparison with most other parks, Amboseli is a relatively small Park (392 square kilometers). yet its wealth of flora and fauna made it be recognized as an International Bio-sphere Reserve.  Amboseli, meaning “Salty Dust” in the Maasai language is an important rangeland for the Masai culture whilst the ‘salty dust’ itself is volcanic ash from the eruptions of the Mount Kilimanjaro a millennium ago. The Amboseli ecosystem is typical of the open savannah grassland habitats of Eastern Africa, featuring open wooded grasslands, rolling hills and swamplands whilst the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro creates a unique selection of ecosystems found nowhere else on earth.

The Amboseli basin is fed by springs that provide a permanent source of water during the dry season, while the river systems north of the basin form a seasonal flood plain that is used by migratory animals during the rainy seasons. Although the region has a relatively low wildlife biomass it supports a greater variety of animals than neighboring Tsavo, which is fifty times biggeri. Over 53 species of herbivores and carnivores can be viewed with ease, the most conspicuous being the troops of over one thousand elephant who range the plains and wallow the swamps. A number of other unique animals also populate the area includes: lion, cheetah, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, rhino, wildebeest, gerenuks, impalas, gazelles, hyenas, baboons, bats and about 425 different species of birds.

Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Maasai Mara Game Reserve – an extension of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park sharing same ecosystem is a land of vast migrating herds. The land is a panorama of vast rolling plains and rounded hills. The Mara River and its tributaries host some very dense riverine forests that allow the prey to stalk on their predators. This is the place that while on the plains, be on the look-out for the predators hidden among the acacia trees: Black-maned Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Hyenas, Jackals, e.t.c..as well as the enormous grazing herds that are ever present

The Masai Mara Reserve has the highest densities of wildlife found in Africa and this is the place that vast majority of wildlife filming takes place.  The most spectacular feature here is the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from the plains of Serengeti that cross the Tanzanian border and rivers to reach the Mara’s grasslands from late June, tracked by predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and circled by vultures as the journey unfolds, the migration provides a game viewing experience that is not equaled anywhere else in Africa. Though the seasonal migration, game viewing is excellent year round. Game includes :- elephant, Black Rhino, buffalo, wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, hartebeest, various antelope and gazelle, lion, leopard, giraffe, elephant cheetah, hippo, crocodile and much more.
